Suite Concertante for Flute, Viola and Harp
Shepherds – Prayer – Dance
Publisher: The Marc Lavry Heritage Society
Synopsis:
The three-movement Suite Concertante is a perfect example of Lavry’s ability to convey the different facets of Israeli music.
- Shepherds – Allegro: The theme of the first movement is based on the composer’s song Shir Roim (Shepherd’s Song). It is pastoral and project a naive mood.
- Prayer – Andante : The second movement is lyrical and intimate. In this section the composer cleverly depicts a conflict between the traditional Jewish prayer melody, in minor mode, and the optimistic new Israeli music, in major.
- Dance – Vivo: The third movement, which is also based on Lavry’s original song Machol (Dance), is a rhythmical, humorous and energetic movement.
The composition was commissioned in 1966 by Trio Leandro of South Africa.
